Gym for Joy

October 2nd, 2009

Gym for Joy is Multi-Sport’s gymnastic programme that was established in 1983.

The strength, co-ordination, agility and flexibility obtained in our Gym for Joy programme has life lasting benefits and there is a great deal of carry over skill into other sports.

Gymnastics is an invaluable start to any child’s education. All the basics are covered with an emphasis on floor work, tumbling routines and vaulting in a safe and stimulating environment. The programme follows the Gym for Joy gymnastic badge award scheme.

Gymnastic displays are organised so that gymnastics have the opportunity to demonstrate the routines and skills acquired during lessons.

INTRODUCTION

Since 1983 Multi-Sport Ltd. has developed a structured award scheme for gymnastics. We believe the scheme to be the first and most comprehensive of its kind, catering for the infant to the advanced gymnast.

The Gym for Joy awards are designed for children aged three to the advanced gymnast. The award scheme has been scrutinized by a group of prominent physiotherapists in Hong Kong. All Exercises have been declared safe for children provided the child controls the movement and no external pressure or force is applied. The award scheme is intended to be taught under the supervision of Multi-Sport’s qualified Physical Education staff.

Message from the director of Multi-Sport Limited

Gym for Joy AwardsThe following scheme has been produced by a team of Physical Education teachers and gymnastic specialists to promote gymnastics in clubs and schools throughout Hong Kong.

Gymnastics is a tremendously rewarding sport both physically and mentally, and as the gymnasts derive satisfaction progressing through the awards we hope it will develop their bodies, minds as well as characters.

Aims of the Gym for Joy award scheme:

  • to impart a sense of fun and satisfaction from gymnastics
  • to build a solid foundation for juniors from which to develop
  • to provide a systematic structured progression for juniors in a safe environment
  • to develop strong bodies, minds and characters

About the award scheme

We aim to provide the best Junior Gymnastic Award Scheme possible and to make it challenging, rewarding and practical to use. There is a strong argument not to have badges for gymnastic lessons. Motivation should be intrinsic, deriving a sense of joy and satisfaction from exploring the limits of movement. The sport should be loved without the stress of being examined. We combined Modern Educational Gymnastics with a structured approach so that all children are challenged regardless of age, sex, shape or ability.

It is important for teachers, parents and children alike not to get carried away with the awards. Often we joke that the children like receiving badges and the parents get ecstatic. One must keep sight of the aims of the award.

Creativity is built in the scheme to allow children to think at develop cognitive skills. Partner work for co-operation and challenging team building skills are included in our Gym for Joy curriculum.

Furthermore the badge award scheme acts as a reference and guide to a systematic approach to junior gymnastics. Multi-Sport teachers hold seminars to reinforce the progressions of each movement taught as well as the correct spotting techniques to safely and effectively coach gymnastics. This enables Physical Education teachers whose gymnastics is not their strong discipline to effectively coach the sport.

Great emphasis is place on praising personal achievement in lessons. Thus, our programme really lives up to its name: GYM FOR JOY.
